At present there is no legal right for grieving parents to take paid time off (other than reasonable upaid leave to deal with emergencies) and compassionate leave comes down to the employer's policy.

New legislation has been proposed to give employees, with 26 weeks' continuous service, who have lost a child under the age of 18, a period of two weeks' paid bereavement leave.

The cost of the leave would be recoverable by the employer from the government (fully in the case of small firms and at around 90% for larger employers).
