A Court of Appeal ruling today confirmed that Islamic faith marriages are legally considered to be "non marriages" within the scope of English law.

This ruling will affect those who have chosen to enter into a religious marriage, known as a nikah, but have elected not to additionally go through a civil ceremony - making it a legal marriage in the eyes of the Court.

Inevitably this will leave many without financial protection and ultimately no redress to the courts in respect of financial claims such as maintenance and division of marriage assets, as they will have no rights when it comes to divorce.
